State Superintendent of Schools
Kathy Cox has been awarded the "Friend of Mathematics Award" from the
Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM).
The award, which is only handed out when there is a deserving recipient,
was given to Superintendent Cox for her leadership in the revision of the
state's math curriculum.
"This is truly an honor and I thank the Georgia Council for this award," said
Superintendent Cox, who received the award at GCTM's recent Math Conference in Eatonton. "It means a tremendous amount to be recognized by
a group like GCTM, which is so dedicated to success for all of
our students."
Dottie Whitlow, the President of GCTM, said, "Kathy
Cox is receiving this award because she has exhibited passion, vision,
leadership, and courage in raising expectations and standards for mathematics
education in this state with the creation of the Georgia Performance Standards
for mathematics."
Superintendent Cox said she shares the award with the
groups of educators and academics that wrote the new math standards and the
teachers who are implementing the new curriculum in the classroom.
