Mathematics Program

The Georgia performance standards for mathematics have been designed to achieve a balance among concepts, skills, and problem solving. The curriculum stresses rigorous concept development, presents realistic and relevant tasks, and keeps a strong emphasis on computational skills. At all grades, the curriculum encourages students to reason mathematically, to evaluate mathematical arguments both formally and informally, to use the language of mathematics to communicate ideas and information precisely, and to make connections among mathematical topics and to other disciplines.

Mathematics: K-5 Precision Review

The Precision Review of the Mathematics K-5 performance standards were published for public review from June 13 to August 11. Comments were reviewed by the K-12 Mathematics Advisory Committee with changes made as deemed appropriate by the committee. The comments received represented diverse views; however, the merits of all comments were considered. The State Board of Education approved the revisions to the Georgia Performance Standards for Mathematics in grades K-5 on September 11, 2008. These standards will be implemented and assessed by the Georgia Department of Education beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. Should you have any questions and/or concerns regarding these proposed changes, please feel free to contact: Janet Davis, Mathematics Program Manager at jdavis@doe.k12.ga.us.

GeorgiaStandards.org is a dynamic, interactive, online resource that is designed to enhance and support teaching and learning in Georgia with the Georgia Performance Standards as the main focus.
This website includes:
-standards
-framework units
-videos
-middle school mathematics webcasts
-mathematics parent letters

The implementation of this curriculum will require that mathematics classrooms at every grade be student-focused rather than teacher-focused. Working individually or collaboratively, students should be actively engaged in inquiry and discovery related to the world around them.
