June 2008

At the Georgia Department of Education, we are committed to a vision: Leading the nation in improving student achievement.

That vision is the foundation for everything we do.

For five years, the State Board of Education and the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) have been guided by a set of strategic goals and we have seen great results. However, as we have updated those goals recently, it became clear we have not communicated our plan for education in Georgia to the public as well as we could have.

For that reason, we have created a new Strategic Plan website that gives the public an in-depth look at the strategies and initiatives that are the focus of our work at the GaDOE. This site provides constant feedback to us - and to you - regarding how we are moving toward our vision.

On the Strategic Plan website, you will find our 15 goals, backed up by specific strategies and initiatives for improving education for all Georgia students. You will also find scores of indicators that provide the data we are using to track our success.

Some of this data will look familiar, like "Graduation Rate" and "SAT scores." But other indicators are more precise, such as "Biology End-of-Course Test Scores for schools served by the Science Mentor Program" or "Average Teacher Retention Rate for Middle Schools that Did Not Make Adequate Yearly Progress." While these may seem like odd statistics, they help us see the specific impact of the programs we have implemented at the GaDOE and provide a clear picture of where our challenges remain.

This site is not the place to go to find a district's test scores or get information about your hometown school. For that please visit our School Finder, which provides access to very detailed data at the state, system and school level.

The Strategic Plan website is a place where you can hold me, the State Board of Education and the entire Georgia Department of Education accountable for our work and our results. I hope you will take some time to look around. If you need help navigating the site, just download our quick guide. (Link to Guide)

And, as always, if you have any comments or ideas, please feel free to contact me at state.superintendent@doe.k12.ga.us.

Thank you for visiting!

The Georgia Teacher of the Year awards banquet was held on Friday, May 9. Donna Lowry, 11 Alive News Education Reporter, served as emcee for the event at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. A reception hosted by Washington Mutual was an elegant addition to the event. Superintendent Kathy Cox was proud to honor over 100 district teachers of the year. Superintendent Cox said, "These teachers are shining examples of great teachers all over the state of Georgia."

Fulton County's Benjamin Banneker High School JROTC presented the colors and led the pledge of allegiance. Columbia County Teacher of the Year, Danielle Callan, beautifully sang the national anthem. The Tigerettes from F. L. Stanton Elementary School in Atlanta Public Schools got the celebration started which an energetic dance routine that involved many members of the audience - which included Legislators, local system Superintendents, Principals, and of course, teachers and their families.

After a three course meal from Wolfgang Puck, each district Teacher of the Year came across the stage for a photo, certificate and gift from Superintendent Cox. 2008 Georgia Teacher of the Year Emily Jennette offered insight about her experiences serving as an ambassador for education in Georgia over the last year.

The ten finalists for 2009 Georgia Teacher of the Year were honored and presented many gifts, including laptops and AirTran airline vouchers.

The evening ended with the announcement of the 2009 Teacher of the Year. Humbly, Leanne Maule from Cartersville City addressed the crowd and offered praise for all of her colleagues in attendance. Ms. Maule's role as 2009 Georgia Teacher of the Year will begin in July.
