State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox named the 2006 Georgia Schools of Excellence on March 9, 2006. These 20 schools come from all over the state and include 17 elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school.

"These are the schools that are getting it done," Superintendent Cox said. "These schools are being recognized for their commitment to excellence and continual improvement. Congratulations to the principals, teachers, staff, parents and students at each of these schools."

This is the 26th year that the Georgia Department of Education has awarded the Schools of Excellence and the third year that the winners have been chosen using criteria closely aligned with No Child Left Behind. The Schools of Excellence are chosen from two categories:

- Those that finished in the top 10 percent for student achievement in reading/language arts and math.
- Those that showed the greatest gains for student achievement in reading/language arts and math over three years.
