Superintendent surprises winners with $25,000 prize
OCTOBER 27, 2005 – A Language Arts teacher from Atlanta and a Science teacher from Forsyth County have won 2005 Milken Family Foundation Educator Award.
State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox surprised the teachers at school assemblies Thursday with the news they had won the award and the $25,000 prize that comes with it. The winners are Kelli D. Schuyler, of Forsyth Central High School, and Susan Buckson-Greene of Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta.
"These two women are not only great teachers but they are shining examples of people who have dedicated their lives to education and are having a huge impact on our children," Superintendent Cox said. "Congratulations to both of these great teachers."
Ms. Schuyler and Ms. Buckson-Greene were among hundreds of teachers nominated for the award by their colleagues. A Blue Ribbon panel assembled by the Georgia Department of Education chose five finalists and the Milken Family Foundation picked the two winners.
Susan Buckson Greene, of Douglasville, has been a teacher since 1992, starting in the Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County school systems in Maryland. In Aug. 2001, she moved to Booker T. Washington High School. Since coming to the school, she developed the "Success Hook-up Curriculum" and has taught AP classes. She is also the advisor for Future Educators of America, Inc., a Graduation Coordinator, a Class Advisor and a Lead Teacher. In 2004, she also received her Masters of Divinity from Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.
Kelli Schuyler, of Cumming, has taught AP Chemistry, AP Prep Chemistry, Oceanography and Biology at Forsyth Central High School since 1998. Since 2000, she has been Chairperson of the Science Department, as well. After working as a Pulmonary Research Scientist for eight years – including stints at Emory and the Atlanta VA Hospital – Ms. Schuyler wanted to bring the "real world of science" into the classroom. She has received many awards, including STAR teacher, FCHS Teacher of the Year and The Nobel Educator of Distinction. She also advises many clubs and is one of the teacher trainers for the new Georgia Performance Standards.
